Character: Minako Aino / Sailor V / Sailor Venus
Fandom: Sailor Moon (manga-based)

Personality: Minako is a person who has two entirely different sides to her and can, at times, switch between the two as if it's nothing. The first side and the side that people see or notice more easily is the hyper ditz inside her. Whenever Minako is somewhere it's pretty noticable for everyone around that she's present: she talks, rambles, has way over the top melodramatic reactions, fangirls over cute boys and true love and sometimes even overrules every other opinion with her own. She seems seriously confident and doesn't even seem to feel any shame about boasting about herself whenever she can, no matter whether it's about her looks or any other aspect of herself. Especially boys are a big part of this side of her, there's barely a time where she isn't talking about, thinking of or fangirling over boys. Minako's a very romantic person - the self-proclaimed 'goddess of love' - and always in search of her first love, even though she has already liked dozens of boys before that 'first love'. It goes up to a point where you might even just call her a hopeless romantic. Sometimes it may seem like she has no sense of morality when she's in the middle of one of her over the top moods (sneaking into another school, which may or may not be the actual enemy base, just to see a concert without paying seems a-okay to her for example) but her heart really is in the right place. In fact, she often actually stands up for girls, considering the enemy's plans especially in the early series often involve deceiving girls, and people in general when she fights the monsters in the series. The main problem is just that she seems to lose her mind easily once she gets fired up; once Minako has a goal in mind it'll take a great deal to stop her. Crossing moral borders (like sneaking into concerts without paying as described above) isn't a problem either in that case, although she would definitely hesitate at offenses bigger than that. Minako would never hurt someone innocent in her full mind.

But she isn't just a boy-crazy hyper machine. Even though it's hard to tell at times Minako has matured a great deal on her own, because she spent quite a while fighting on her own by now and even experienced deeply falling in love and accepting that that love isn't always meant to be. This maturity often goes hidden behind her ditzy appearance, but once she needs to get down to business Minako really takes things seriously and tries her best. What was said above applies in this case too: Minako is very stubborn and will keep on going when she has a goal in mind no matter what, even in more serious situations. You won't see her back down easily in a fight. After all, she's is the leader of the four senshi who protect the princess and she takes this job very seriously. You can definitely notice whenever she gets more serious and goes into some sort of leader mode - she is actually a pretty good leader when it comes down to it. She refuses to leave parts of a group behind when there's still a chance to save everyone (as demonstrated in the anime when she walked back to save Sailor Pluto at the beginning of Stars) but also knows to be realistic when that's not possible (as shown near the end of the first arc of the manga; she knows that the only way left for them to help their princess is by sacrificing their own lives and is ultimately the one who suggests it to the other three). She's kind and deeply loyal to the people she cares about and would give anything for them - including her life.

But as confident as she seems while in her ditz mode, Minako actually has a great deal of insecurities. In fact, most of the time when there's an episode or manga arc centered about her it's about her being insecure about something-- her power, her leadership ability, her duty as a senshi conflicting with her dreams. She just doesn't show it openly most of the time and when she does she only shares it with the people closest to her - preferably Artemis. She often even tries to hide it from the other senshi, perhaps to not show her weakness since she's supposed to be the leader. Minako is a person who is very passionate about her dreams and that's why she often gets into conflict about exactly which one of her dreams she should persue; often it's a choice between her duty as a senshi and one of her other dreams, like getting a boyfriend or becoming an idol. Outwardly Minako will not easily show this doubt and instead attempt to heavily persue both, but inwardly she always has trouble with that sort of thing. It has to be said though that by this point in canon she has already made up her mind for the most part: she's fully dedicating herself to her role as a sailor senshi, even if she might pretend on the outside that she's still aiming for all her goals. But Minako knows she won't have time to become an idol or a movie star when she has to keep fighting and protect her princess, and she's already been told that her love life will be hopeless for all eternity just so she can keep on fighting no matter what. It's sort of a sad kind of resolution, but it's Minako's chosen path. Her whole duty as a leader is often a big cause of worry for her as well, since she constantly worries about not being good enough as a leader. This is mainly demonstrated in the Dreams arc of the manga, in which everyone was able to reach their powered up forms but her and she can't help but doubt her own capabilities in her thoughts. She can even worry about the things she usually seems most confident about, like her looks or her personality or even her ability to attract boys. In one of the bonus manga chapters - Rei and Minako's School Battle - she keeps comparing herself to Rei, who is hailed by all as a dignified and beautiful girl, and next to her Minako seems much more childish, clumsy, unrefined and ditzy. Eventually when Rei tells her that she's so dirty (after Minako managed to get herself all dirty through a clumsy action), Minako snaps and yells "Unlike you, I guess I'm.. just a scummy girl!" It wouldn't be too much of a stretch to say her overconfidence on the outside is mostly overcompensation or false bravado.

Minako tends to get low grades at school, not exactly because she's very dumb but most likely because she just thinks she has better things (boy chasing, karaoke, etc.) to do than studying. She isn't a very lazy person in general, considering she does spend the time ignoring homework by doing many activities, but when it comes down to things she doesn't want to do or doesn't like, like homework, she turns into a complete bum. She and Usagi often end up being make-up test or detention partners at school. She also has a habit of screwing up proverbs constantly ("beggers will be choosers!") that might make other people think she's not the brightest, although it's more of a quirk. Minako loves physical activities, especially sports, though; she's is very athletic (an after effect of her career as Sailor V, but also partially naturally) and especially loves volleyball, which she is pretty good at. It would be a stretch to place her in some sort of stereotypical tomboy category because of it since she's actually very much a girly girl with her constant obsessions over looks and boys.

History: A long, long time ago, the Earth wasn't the only populated planet. All planets had their own kingdoms united in the Silver Millennium, with the most important ones being the Earth and Moon kingdoms. For the small Moon Kingdom held the most powerful source of power; the Ginzuishou or Silver Crystal, which was linked to the moon's royal line. All the other planets had a sailor soldier/sailor senshi connected to them. The job of the senshi of the four 'inner' planets (Mercury, Venus, Mars and Jupiter) was to protect the moon's princess, Princess Serenity, and the four senshi of the 'outer' planets (Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto) were to protect the solar system from intruders from outside.

But the threat to the long-lasting peace came from the inside. Contact between the Earth and Moon kingdoms was strictly forbidden, but the curious moon princess couldn't help herself and often snuck down to Earth to admire the planet's beauty, even ignoring her senshi's warnings while doing so. And it wasn't just the beautiful planet she fell in love with, but also the planet's beautiful crown prince, Prince Endymion. And he fell in love with her too. A forbidden love.

This still wouldn't have been too big of a problem if it weren't for one of the Earth Kingdom palace's maids, Beryl, who was also in love with the prince. When she in all her jealousy encountered the demon Metallia sealed away in the Earth she set the demon free and put the people of the Earth up against the people of the Moon, causing a huge war between the planet and its moon. Prince Endymion tried to protect Serenity, but was struck down while protecting her. Princess Serenity in grief took her own life. As Queen Serenity can't bear to watch all of this any longer she uses the power of the Ginzuishou to send the prince, princess and all the senshi into the future to be reborn and live a happy life this time.

Sailor Venus is reborn as a cheery melo-dramatic girl, Aino Minako, without any knowledge of her past life. In fact, Minako lives an ordinairy life until the moment she meets Artemis - one of the cat advisors of the Moon Kingdom who was also sent into the future by Queen Serenity. He tells her that she's actually the sailor suited soldier of love and justice, Sailor V, who has to fight against enemies sent by the Dark Agency (later revealed to be a subsection of the Dark Kingdom, the reborn enemies of the Moon Kingdom lead by Metallia) and gives her a pen to transform with. From that point on the series follows a sort of monster-of-the-day structure; in every chapter a villain from the Dark Agency appears with a (sometimes ridiculous) plot to steal energy from humans and Sailor V has to defeat them.

Sailor V becomes quite famous (they even make a video game about her), but at a certain point a rival to Sailor V appears - Kaitou Ace, a pretty young man who also fights the enemy and sometimes jumps in at the critical moments to save Sailor V. Now most girls fangirl Kaitou Ace rather than Sailor V, Minako herself included at times. In the end Minako wins a contest and is allowed to star as the female lead in a movie in which Kaitou Ace himself is the male lead. But during the filming he reveals to Minako that he's actually Danburite, the leader of the Dark Agency. In their past life he was Adonis, a foot soldier from the planet Venus. He fell in love with Sailor Venus, but since she was of a much higher rank she was unreachable for him. He died in the battle between the Earth and Moon kingdoms, but was reincarnated like the others and then became the leader of the Dark Agency, Danburite. He attacks Minako, but she defeats him as Sailor V. Before he vanishes away, he tells her one last thing, one last fortune; that her love will be hopeless for all eternity. But he actually means it as a good thing, it means that she won't have to make the ultimate choice between love and duty. ("Your fate is to continue fighting.")

After this battle Minako regains the memories of her past life, her allies and most importantly the princess she needs to protect. She decides to head off to Tokyo to find her allies.

(And then the Sailor Moon canon history, but I'm too lazy to type all of that up and this is my old history for the Sailor V version I apped a long time ago in an old game, so, yup.)

Abilities: Aside from being fairly fit and good athletically (perhaps the most so out of all the five inner senshi, she's shown to be very agile and good at sports) from her time as Sailor V and then continued as Sailor Venus, Minako also has special powers as Sailor Venus. She gains her power from the planet Venus, and this already gives away what most of her powers are about. The planet is named after the Roman goddess of love, after all, so most of Minako's attacks are love- or light-based. When she transforms into Sailor Venus she is able to perform these attacks. To give a few examples - 'Crescent Beam', in which she shoots a beam of light at the enemy, would be a light-based attack and 'Rolling Heart Vibration' would be an example of a love-based attack, in which she fires some sort of heart-like energy blast at the enemy. (For a complete list of the attacks, they're all listed right here from Crescent Boomerang to Venus Love and Beauty Shock!) She's shown to be able to fight with either a sword (as the leader of the sailor senshi who protect the princess) or a whip in this form as well.
